Virgin Voyages

Tom McAlpin has had an enviable 30-year career in the domestic and international cruise industry. In his current role as president and CEO of Virgin Voyages, a cruise line he helped found in 2014 backed by Bain Capital and the Virgin Group, he leads a world-class team in all elements of ship design, construction, crew safety, management and operations and service delivery. 
Before joining Virgin Voyages in January 2015, McAlpin spent five years as president and CEO for The World, Residences at Sea. At 644 feet and with 165 private luxury homes, The World is the largest private residential ship in the world.

Prior to moving to The World, McAlpin was a key player and part of the Disney Cruise Line founding management team. During his 14 years with the company, he was responsible for developing the business plan for Disney’s first two ships and the growth of the business with two additional vessels, along with negotiating the contracts for Castaway Cay. He spent the final five years of his tenure with Disney Cruises as its president. Before that, he was director of Corporate Planning and Analysis at Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and a chief financial officer for CSB Leasing Group in 1984. He began his career with KPMG as a senior auditor. 

McAlpin, who in addition to his bachelor’s degrees from FSU, holds an MBA from the University of Miami, created the curriculum for a course in cruise ship management at the Rosen School of Hospitality and is a former member of the school’s advisory council. He is a member of the FSU Foundation Board of Trustees and a former member of the college’s Board of Governors. He was also on on the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s national board, for 6 years, an organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions, serving as its chair in 2012.
